I have the honour to address you on the subject of the Peak Hospital and to inform you that the responsibility of maintaining this Institution has been undertaken by the Govern- ment in the following circumstances,

On February 17th, 1922, the Directors of the Peak Hospital Ltd. notified the Government of their intention to close the Hospital on September 30th. They pointed out that for some years receipts from fees had little more than covered expenses and that in the circumstances they did not feel justified in recommending expenditure on certain essential repairs and improvements more especially since the Government was contemplat- -ing the provision of further Hospital accommodation in the near future.

It is true that when the Kowloon Hospital and the War Memorial Nursing Home are completed the accommodation now

provided for first and second class patients at the Peak Hospital

will not be required, but at the present time the existing

Government and private Hospitals would be insufficient more especially since the alterations and repairs to the Victoria Hospital are still in progress.

The Government accordingly approached the directors with an offer to guarantee a monthly sum of $200 to meet the expected deficit. It was hoped that any further aims required
